Assignments

For 9 May

No new readings! Next week we’ll be wrapping up.

  • Writing assignment #4:
Looking back on the topics explored this semester, which one(s)
interested you the most? Is there anything you wish we could have
spent more time on? Less? I’m looking for feedback that I can use in
shaping the syllabus for this class in the future. 100 words at least.

For April 18th

Read pp. 125–133 (stop before section 6.2).

  • Writing Assignment #3:
Pick any noun or verb in English and its
translation into another language of your choice. Create a paradigm for
each of these words (2 paradigms in total) in which you identify what
morphosyntactic categories are marked on it in each of those languages,
and identify how its corresponding morphosyntactic features are marked.
In a paragraph, make note of any differences in terms of morphosyntactic
categories. (For example, English “child” and Italian “ragazzo” differ in
that the Italian noun marks for gender, while the English doesn’t.)

For April 4th

  • Read pp.99–112 (end just before section 5.3)
  • Complete writing assignment #2:

Compounding is popular in food names, with examples including
“chicken nuggets,” “ribeye,” and “eggplant parmesan.” As with compound words in general, some food names are endocentric, and some are exocentric. (Ribeye is exocentric; the other two are endocentric.)

Find five compound words that name foods (other than the three listed above), and identify whether they are endocentric or exocentric. There must be at least one of each type. (So 4 endocentric and 1 exocentric, for example, would be okay.)

Then, show the structure for all five words in bracket notation. This may be handwritten or typed.

For this assignment, you don’t need to write 300 words – just provide the compound words, identify whether they’re endo- or exocentric, and provide bracket notation for each.

For 29 February

  • Remember! There’s no class on Feb. 22nd.
  • Read the rest of this chapter (pp.41–45).
  • Submit your first writing assignment by 6:40pm:

Writing Assignment #1

Consider the following English words:
forbid, forget, forgive, forgo, forswear

What evidence is there for them being complex? What evidence is there for
them being simplex? Which do you think they are?

Although there is a right answer, there are good reasons to argue in either direction; I’m more concerned with your argument being morphologically sound and well-reasoned than with just getting the right answer, so be sure to explain your thinking and cite pages from the textbook. Should be about 300 words.

Submit your assignment as either a .pdf attachment, .docx attachment, or Google Doc link to me at joseph.pentangelo@csi.cuny.edu by 6:40pm on Thursday, 29 February.

Please save your file with the name “Ling 350 [Your last name] WA1” (so, for example, mine would be “Ling 350 Pentangelo WA1”). This is to help me keep track of who’s submitted what.
